Acupuncture for Nausea
I have worked with many patients experiencing nausea
and have seen positive responses to acupuncture.
Research has also examined acupuncture for nausea
and vomiting after surgery, including breast surgery.
Nausea can have many causes, so treatment should take
your symptoms, medical history, and any ongoing medical
care into account. Acupuncture may be considered as a
complementary approach to symptom management.
Common Types of Nausea
1. Food-Related Nausea
This type of nausea may begin suddenly after
eating contaminated food. Symptoms can include
vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort,
chills, or fever.
Suspected food poisoning may require medical
care, particularly when symptoms are severe
or make it difficult to stay hydrated.
2. Sluggish Stomach
When the stomach empties more slowly than
normal, symptoms may include nausea, feeling
full after eating, and constipation.
These symptoms can have several causes,
including conditions that affect stomach
movement. Persistent symptoms should be
medically evaluated.
3. Stress-Related Stomach Discomfort
Emotional stress can affect digestive symptoms.
Some patients notice nausea alongside acid
reflux, constipation, diarrhea, or occasional
vomiting during stressful periods.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may also involve
changes in bowel habits and abdominal discomfort.
Acupuncture may be considered as part of an
individualized approach to managing symptoms.
4. Medication-Related Nausea
Some prescription medications, antibiotics,
and chemotherapy treatments can cause nausea
or other digestive symptoms.
When working with patients receiving chemotherapy,
my focus is on helping them manage discomfort
alongside their oncology care. Being able to
eat and maintain adequate nutrition is especially
important during treatment.
Do not stop or change prescribed medication
without speaking to the clinician who
prescribed it.
5. Nausea Associated with Stomach Lining Problems
Irritation or damage to the stomach lining
may be associated with nausea and upper
abdominal discomfort. Possible contributing
factors include certain medications, alcohol
use, and other medical conditions.
Because treatment depends on the cause,
suspected stomach lining damage should be
medically evaluated. Acupuncture does not
replace treatment for an underlying
stomach condition.
