Cold & Flu

How Acupuncture Can Help Treat the Common Cold and Seasonal Illnesses
Acupuncture is a powerful tool in supporting the immune system, especially during cold and flu season. Most acupuncture points used for treating colds are located on the upper body. When needles are inserted, they stimulate an immune response—redirecting your body’s defenses to the entry points most commonly exposed to viruses, such as the nose, eyes, mouth, and ears. While this is a simplified explanation, it offers a starting point to understanding how acupuncture works through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Common Cold
The common cold typically spreads like wildfire during the spring and fall. As homes and offices get sealed up, air circulation drops, and temperature fluctuations increase—ideal conditions for cold viruses to spread.
Symptoms:
  • Runny nose
  • Mild or no perspiration
  • Headaches
  • Body aches that move around
  • General fatigue
Patients often report feeling better immediately after treatment but still require rest to fully recover.
Flu
As colder weather sets in late fall, flu season ramps up. Poor ventilation and closed spaces contribute to the spread.
Symptoms may include:
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Profuse sweating
  • Vomiting
  • Cough (with or without phlegm)
Fatigue-Related Colds
These colds strike suddenly and are usually linked to burnout. They can result from long work hours, stress, lack of sleep, overexertion, or insufficient recovery time.
Watch for:
  • Frequent colds
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Weak voice
  • Occasional shortness of breath
Summer Flu
Though rare, the summer flu does happen. I’ve treated about five cases over the years, and they can be surprisingly intense.
Symptoms:
  • Sore throat
  • Fever
  • Heavy sweating
  • Vomiting
  • Extreme fatigue
One patient had such a severe case that their doctor ordered a CAT scan to rule out cancer recurrence. Fortunately, with just two acupuncture treatments, the patient made a full recovery and returned to work.
