Acupuncture for Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) can cause physical
and emotional symptoms in the days or weeks
before menstruation. Some patients explore
acupuncture as a complementary approach to
managing symptoms such as discomfort, sleep
difficulties, and irritability.
Treatment needs and responses vary from person
to person. During a consultation, we can discuss
your symptoms and an individualized appointment
schedule. No specific number of visits can
guarantee a symptom-free menstrual cycle.
Menstrual symptoms may change with stress,
body weight, medications, and other health
or lifestyle factors. Persistent or disruptive
symptoms deserve medical evaluation to identify
appropriate treatment options.
PMS Symptom Patterns in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) uses symptom
patterns to help guide an acupuncture consultation.
The categories below describe observations
considered in TCM; they are not medical diagnoses
and do not establish the cause of PMS symptoms.
1. Stress-Associated PMS
Some patients experience painful periods,
insomnia, irritability, or anger alongside
periods of increased stress.
A TCM practitioner may consider this
combination of symptoms when developing
an individualized complementary care plan.
Response to acupuncture varies, and
rapid improvement cannot be guaranteed.
2. Blood Stagnation Pattern
In TCM, a blood stagnation pattern may
be considered when pain occurs before
or during menstruation.
TCM describes the treatment approach
for this pattern as “moving blood.”
This traditional term does not mean
that menstrual pain has been shown
to result from poor circulation or
that acupuncture corrects hormone levels.
3. Energy or Blood Deficiency Pattern
This TCM pattern may be considered when
a patient reports fatigue or light
or short menstrual periods. Health
history, including recent surgery,
changes in body weight, or birth
control use, may also be discussed
during a consultation.
TCM describes the treatment approach
as “building energy and blood.”
This is not the same as treating
medically diagnosed anemia. If anemia
is suspected, medical testing and
appropriate treatment are important.
4. Dampness Pattern
In TCM, a dampness pattern may be
considered when symptoms include
a feeling of heaviness, fatigue,
recent weight gain, body aches,
irritability, or menstrual discomfort.
Patients may also report irregular
periods, vaginal discharge, changes
in temperature sensitivity, sweating,
insomnia, or back and knee discomfort.
These symptoms can have different
medical causes and should not be
attributed to a TCM pattern alone.
