Back pain is a frequently encountered clinical condition and is commonly treated by acupuncturists. Pain is frequently seen occurring on the sides of the spine, directly on the vertebrae, and frequently radiates down the leg or arm. There are traditional patterns of back pain in Chinese Medicine and I have outlined those commonly seen in my practice below.
Deficiency Back Pain
Symptoms include back pain; fatigue, cold symptoms, pain which improves with application of heat or pressure.
Traumatic Injury Back Pain

In severe cases the pain interrupts sleep and the patient suffers from fatigue and sometimes depression.
Radiating Back Pain
Pain associated with a back condition where the pain is felt in one leg or both legs, pain alternates from one leg to the other leg, and/or pain travels into the groin area.
Hormone Level Changes Back Pain
Aching of back, aching of the lower back, better with massage, sometimes depression, sometimes insomnia, hot palms and feet or tingling of palms and feet, hot flashes, night sweating.
