Acupuncture for Constipation: A Natural, Holistic Approach
Constipation is one of the more common conditions treated with acupuncture. It’s generally defined as going 3–5 days without a normal bowel movement, or experiencing stools that are hard, painful to pass, or leave you feeling bloated and uncomfortable.
One important factor often overlooked is hydration. As one of my wise old professors in acupuncture school used to say, “You need water to float a boat.” It always made us laugh when he walked through the clinic saying this—but the message stuck. Without enough water, your digestive system can’t function properly.
Common Patterns of Constipation in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Fatigue-Related Constipation
Low energy levels can make it harder for your body to move the bowels effectively. This is especially common in individuals who are overworked or physically drained. In these cases, acupuncture treatments focus on strengthening the digestive and respiratory systems to restore natural movement.
Stress-Induced Constipation
Stress is a frequent trigger for constipation, and I often see this pattern in my clinic. Stress can interfere with the function of various parts of the digestive system, leading to irregularity and discomfort. Acupuncture helps calm the nervous system and ease digestive tension.
Constipation Due to Fluid Loss or Anemia
When the body lacks fluids or is weakened by anemia, symptoms often include dry, hard-to-pass stools, a pale complexion, dry skin, light or irregular menstrual cycles, and a pale tongue. Treatment focuses on replenishing fluids and nourishing the blood to ease bowel movements.
