Coughs are commonly treated with acupuncture and cupping. With coughs I am looking and listening for the frequency of the patient’s cough, severity of the cough, and finally the color of the phlegm (clear, yellow, green).
Coughs can be caused by ether external or internal factors. External factors like dust, allergies, dry weather, cold weather, damp weather, viruses, and bacteria.
Lung Function Impaired by Common Cold
Coughs associated with common cold, have symptoms of headache, stuffy nose, desire to lie curled up with a blanket. We look specifically to see if the patient is sweating or not sweating. This pattern is very commonly seen during the spring and fall.
Lung Function Impaired by Flu
Seen often in early spring and late fall, symptoms include cough, vomiting, sweating, sore throat, thirst, and fever with sweating.
Lungs Accumulate Phlegm / Bacterial and Viral Infections
This is the most common type of cough I treat. Symptoms include chronic cough, morning coughs, phlegm that is yellow or green. Patients usually seek acupuncture after the first round of antibiotics failed to resolve the cough.
Note: With severe respiratory infections (those resistant to antibiotic). The best treatment, based on my experience, has been to combine acupuncture, cupping, hot packs, and antibiotics. It is my opinion that treatment regiment has no equal.
