Acupuncture and Palpitations
If you are experiencing palpitations, please see
your cardiologist or primary care physician before
seeking acupuncture treatment for this symptom
at our office. A medical evaluation can help
identify the cause and determine whether further
testing or treatment is needed.
In my practice, patients reporting palpitations
have described several groups of accompanying
symptoms. The categories below reflect patterns
considered during a Traditional Chinese Medicine
(TCM) consultation; they are not medical diagnoses
or explanations of what is causing the palpitations.
Symptom Patterns Considered During Consultation
1. Blood Deficiency Pattern
In TCM, a blood deficiency pattern may
be considered when palpitations occur
alongside fatigue, a pale complexion,
a pale tongue, or disturbed sleep.
Some patients also report vivid dreams.
A history of chronic illness, recent
surgery, or blood loss may be relevant
to the medical assessment. Symptoms
that suggest anemia should be evaluated
by a healthcare professional rather
than attributed to a TCM pattern alone.
2. Emotional Symptom Pattern
Some patients notice palpitations alongside
anxiety, fear, anger, difficulty falling
asleep, or waking during the night.
They may also experience vivid or
upsetting dreams and nightmares.
Stress and emotional symptoms can occur
alongside palpitations, but they do not
rule out a heart rhythm problem or
another medical cause.
3. Symptoms Associated with Hormonal Changes
Some patients report palpitations together
with night sweats, fatigue, back or knee
discomfort, and insomnia.
Hormonal changes are one possible
consideration, but these symptoms do
not confirm a hormone imbalance.
A healthcare professional can assess
whether medical testing or treatment
is appropriate.
