Acupuncture for Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain is a common reason patients seek acupuncture.
In my practice, I have seen patients with a range of shoulder
conditions report improvement in their symptoms. How quickly
someone responds depends on the condition and its severity.
Below are several shoulder conditions frequently seen
in my office.
Common Shoulder Conditions
1. Arthritic Shoulder
Shoulder arthritis may cause pain and stiffness,
particularly during changes in the weather or
in cold and damp conditions.
Patients may have difficulty rotating the shoulder
or lifting the arm. Some also experience arthritis
in other joints.
2. Tendinitis
Shoulder tendinitis is often associated with
repetitive use or activities that aggravate
the joint. It can cause pain during movement
and make everyday tasks uncomfortable.
Acupuncture may be considered as part of a
treatment plan to help manage discomfort
while the affected area recovers.
3. Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder can cause pain and a significant
loss of shoulder movement. In my experience,
some patients notice improvement after a small
number of acupuncture sessions, while others
need a longer course of care.
Recovery time varies, and persistent restriction
of movement may require medical evaluation
and rehabilitation.
4. Torn Rotator Cuff
A rotator cuff tear can cause shoulder pain,
weakness, and difficulty lifting the arm.
Treatment depends on the size and severity
of the tear and whether surgery is needed.
Acupuncture may help manage discomfort as part
of a broader treatment or rehabilitation plan,
including after surgery when approved by the
treating clinician. It does not replace
evaluation or repair of a significant tear.
